Welcome to the General Plan and Hawthorne Blvd Specific Plan Update

Welcome! The City of Lawndale is embarking on update to its General Plan and Hawthorne Boulevard Specific Plan. The General Plan serves as the guiding document for achieving the community’s vision for the future and the Hawthorne Boulevard Specific Plan will help to implement that vision by providing specific direction for development along the City’s central corridor. The General Plan and Specific Plan Update process will provide residents and businesses the opportunity to provide input to help shape the direction of the City going forward.

Located in the “heart of the South Bay”, the City of Lawndale was incorporated in 1959, although the community’s history dates back much earlier to the Rancho Era. The “town” of Lawndale was originally founded in 1905 and remained a predominantly agricultural community until major growth occurred after the conclusion of World War II. Today, Lawndale is primarily a built-out community home to approximately 32,000 residents, with very few parcels of vacant land remaining.

Each city in California is required to have a General Plan which serves as a guiding document for the City’s long-term growth and development. Lawndale’s current General Plan dates back to 1991, and a lot has changed since then. State laws require the City to periodically update our General Plan, which must consider a range of topics, such as land use patterns, mobility, public safety, and housing. While our current General Plan has served Lawndale well, this General Plan Update, together with a strategic update to the City’s Hawthorne Boulevard Specific Plan, provides the City with an opportunity to confirm the community’s goals and priorities and ensure that the General Plan and Specific Plan provide a solid framework to support Lawndale’s continued growth and prosperity.
